April 2018 Phoebe Meeting and Workshop

The evening meeting was preceded by a day-long workshop given by Betts Vidal. Shown here is Betts (right) giving Sondra Von Berg some pointers on creating her shadow box doll, Charlotte Dumas. Check out the class photos under the workshop section in this post.

Betts' Shadow Box Doll Workshop

Betts brought with her to the workshop several of her original pieces, including her Charlotte Dumas (center). She also brought an assortment of fabulous embellishment items she has collected from around the world. They were available for purchase to add to our collages. No one completely finished and sealed their shadow boxes during class time, but below are photos of our flat doll assemblages in various stages of completion. Hopefully the finished pieces will appear at next month's meeting.

Caroline is close to finishing hers—using beautiful silky roses, vintage buttons and bits of vintage lace and cut work.

Jennifer used fabric roses and interesting buttons, and included an exciting background print to make her doll really stand out.

Donna has a lot of embellishing to complete, which entails digging through her vintage stash at home.

Linda incorporated tiny flowers, tiny ribbons and tiny keys to create a lovely theme in her collage.

Harlene's (above) and Marjorie's (below) dolls look finished. We will see when they bring them back next month! Beautiful work, both of you!

Enrichment

A highlight of the evening meeting was Sally's washi tape enrichment session. She generously shared with us her amazing collection of washi tapes and demonstrated how to make a tiny folded-page booklet using washi tape to decorate the covers. It was really fun!

Above are some examples Sally brought to inspire us. So, pull out those tapes you bought (you couldn't resist them at the craft store), and maybe have seldom used.

Here is a photo of a completed book! So easy, so fast, and so cute!

Show and Tell

Colleen wowed us again! This time with two completed fabric collages from Jo's recent "Nasty Women" workshop.

They are both simply amazing!

One of Colleen's latest altered and assembled ventures centers around adding found pieces and recycled and vintage items to crutches. They are definitely conversation pieces. Totally creative!

Zanaib had challenged us to make a "loaded envelope" during her enrichment demonstration at the meeting last month. This is the one Donna completed.

Donna also loves to collage journal covers. Here's one of the latest ones.

Betts, who has inspired and taught many of us to collage over the years, recently completed another of her journal covers. Beautiful!

Betts recently made the lovely book necklace on the right at a recent workshop she attended. She also shared an example of a collaged and decorated envelope she has saved.

Betts sells items from her vast button collection both here and abroad. She brought these button cards she has created to show how she merchandises buttons and other smalls with beautiful graphic cards. It's a wonderful way to just display and keep our own personal collections, too!

Here are more of Bett's tiny treasures. The "grunge" book on the right started as a tiny children's book she found in a Paris flea market. She has embellished it with other fascinating vintage Paris items.

Anne will be starting her craft show season soon, with a show that will be July 14 and 15 in the Bay Area. Watch the calendar for details  as we approach that date. The above and following recent works are examples of the items she will have for sale at her shows. Her work is always so well received and her shows are sellouts! You can see why.
