Enrichment

Zanaib demonstrated how to make "loaded envelopes" like these at the March meeting. Envelopes of any size and shape can be deconstructed and then all surfaces, inside and out, are decorated with glued-on colorful papers. A slit is made and rolled back for the opening. Embellishments can be added, like this 3D paper ornament.

This is a large envelope which has been embellished with lace and a knitted doily.

These unfinished envelopes demonstrate some of the possibilities. Envelopes were handed out at the meeting and we will be bringing our finished projects to the April meeting for show and tell.
Show and Tell

Here is a class photo of the finished Mer Babies from the Stephanie Blythe workshop.

The one above was made by Linda. Stephanie did furnish the doll heads and fish tail, plus the abalone shell. The class consisted of making a beautiful arrangement of shells and other items from the sea to showcase the doll.

Here is a close-up of Marjorie's doll.

And this is the one Sue completed. They are all so gorgeous!

Anne has been busy making more of her fabulous ceramic and polymer dolls which feature different kinds of tins for bodies. This one is constructed with a signature heart tin from Brighton.

Anne just completed a group of Campbells soup can dolls for an Andy Warhol art museum exhibit in Palm Springs. She was lucky to find these beautiful cans on line. We hope we might be able to see some photos from the show, or some of the similar dolls she will be making using the remaining cans.

Anne found this wonderful "Silver Bullet" mint can and turned it into a vampire. Perfect!!!

Bonnie just completed this beautiful necklace, using buttons, spools and beads. It is so striking... love black and white.

Daisy is gearing up for her yearly Girl Scout jamboree and is again taking on the huge task of making figures to put on the poles which will identify the different groups. The theme this year is "California animal species" and this one representing a squirrel is made from painted sculptured cloth.

Linda completed her Phoebe challenge doll that was inspired by food. The three peas in a pod is adorable.

Mary is working to complete the beautiful socks she is knitting for her daughter. A complicated project. Give Mary some yarn and she can knit anything.

Rosie recently joined a group of dear friends at a "Mad Hatter's Tea Party." This has become an annual event and this year she took a paper mache top hat and constructed the large flared top by adding cardboard. She covered it with some great fabric and embellished it with a card, tulle, some bright flowers, etc. Very clever!

Sally has been having so much fun painting and stamping exciting designs on fabric. She constructed these notebooks using various binding techniques and covered the covers with the fabrics. They are amazing!

Sue has been captivated by a number of free on-line crafter web sites and videos featuring various types of craft projects. One of her favorites is "Curious Mondo." Above is a lovely piece of garden art she made using "liquid painting" techniques. Various colors of paint, glue and silicon oil are mixed and stirred to form swirls, and then paper or objects are dipped into the liquids, creating amazing results. We need to Google "liquid painting!"

2018 Phoebe Castro Valley Library Exhibit

The Phoebes installed an exhibit of tiny dolls in the entry cases of the Castro Valley Library on March 1. The exhibit will run for the entire month. Most of the dolls were made by our members, but there are also ones from our personal collections of other artists.

A free make-it-and-take doll event was held on Saturday, March 17.

This is the third year our volunteers have participated in this very popular event where community members of all ages delight in using the huge assortment of materials we supply to make and take home as many dolls as they like.

Photos of the Phoebe entry display are below.
