Great Workshop Followed by Fun-Filled Evening!

On April 21, prior to the monthly Phoebe meeting, Laurie Scott led a full day workshop featuring her techniques used to turn fabric yoyos into beads and embellishments that are beautiful works of art. Above is a photo of one of her elegant necklaces which incorporates a variety of these techniques. A dozen or more avid students tremendously enjoyed a relaxing day of hand sewing and were eager to continue exploring the possibilities... which are infinite.  Thank you, Laurie, for a really great workshop! We were thrilled to have Elise from Spokane join us for the workshop and the meeting. Meticulous beading, hand-sewing, and a lovely fairy photo image. 

Geri is almost finished constructing two of her yoyos into a brooch.

Harlene has not yet completed her embellishing, but her yoyo already looks so lovely.

Linda, tremendously skilled at fine hand work, finished three yoyos during class.

Marjorie is working on completing five different styles. 

 

Mary made a beautiful medallion and covered a plastic ring with rich brocade.

 

 

Show and Tell Photos

Barbara brought her "Flower Doll," which she will be teaching in July. We can't wait to make one for ourselves!

Bonnie has been busy making wall hangings for the upcoming East Bay Open Studios sale. Here are a few of her items featuring fabric, buttons, and her original embellishment designs.

Elise brought with her some of the items she has been working on since we last saw her. Above is a book made up of boxes and a collage of elements.

 

She has been working to complete these exquisite felted Christmas ornaments. Very detailed!

And, we all fell in love with her soft sculpture painted crow. He is absolutely wonderful!

Jo was able to join us for the meeting, and displayed the doll from a previous Christine Shively class that she has recently finished. Beautiful job!

Linda shared with us these two cute children's toys—cloth whales. And, she made two new pincushions that are miniature castles. The bases are made from mayonnaise jar lids.

Rosie has completed two more of her cloth dolls for the Open Studios sale. Her hand-painted faces are amazing.

And, Rosie has had her tin snips out, cutting out a Marilyn Monroe flat doll and several cute figures to sell at Open Studios.

Tani is shown with two cloth dolls she is working on for the Petaluma show. They are perfectly sewn, stuffed and assembled and unfortunately this photo does not do justice to the great faces she has sculpted and painted. Can't wait to see them when they are finished! 

Noodles Galore!

Last month Daisy handed out fabric "noodles" for everyone to take home and make an original project using at least three of them. Just about everyone participated in this challenge and brought their creations to the March meeting. It was amazing to see the variety of challenge results. Above are samples of Zanaib's beautiful fabric collaged greeting cards. Other results may be found in blog photos shown in this post.

 

And, members were also asked to bring some of their favorite pasta sauce to share. Cooked pasta was supplied, and with the accompaniments people brought, we all enjoyed a wonderful potluck pasta feast. It was "noodle night" in more ways than one!

Rosie's Hands-On Tutorial

 

A special treat for the evening was Rosie's tutorial on how to make mini books with wooden covers made from yardstick segments.  

 

They make great card substitutes for expressing personal messages and sentiments to friends and loved ones on special occasions.

Most of us did not have time to finish ours, and will be bringing them to the April meeting for show and tell.

Here are just a few of the wonderful things made with the fabrics given to us for the noodle exchange. Above is Bonnie's wall hanging.

 

Rosie made the little dress shown above. It sure is cute and embellished with lots of decorative stitching.

 

Cat fancier Suzanne made the adorable kitty above with a pattern from one of her books.

 

Elizabeth, who has previously wowed us with her ghost babies and monsters, did it again with this little monster lady.

 

Donna rolled her noodle fabrics into tubes and created a replica of an African tribal cloth bead collar necklace.

 

Mary is shown modeling a beautiful necklace Harlene created. Harlene made several more necklaces by knitting wire tubes with the cloth strips inside. A really cleaver idea, but unfortunately I did not get a photo.

 

 

 

Above are some of the colorful plush fish dolls that Colleen made for Stichin' for Kids project. Phoebes sew various soft toys to give to children staying in hospitals for extended periods of time.

 

Harlene finished her doll from the Elinor Peace Bailey workshop using beautiful Hoffman fabrics and the face Elinor painted for her.

 

Donna brought an example of the mixed media jewelry pieces she is making for the East Bay Open Studios event and sale at Goose Cottage in Alameda in June.

 

 

Workday and Day Meeting in February

February 19 was a busy day for Phoebes. The morning started at 10 A.M. with an outreach project—making cloth toys—followed by lunch and a business meeting at 1:00 P.M. At the meeting Gerri explained the workday program, Stitching for Kids, made possible by a group that meets the first Wednesday of every month at the Cotton Patch in Lafayette. They make soft toys, doll clothes and accessories for children who are in hospitals for long stays.  Each girl on the list gets a doll and a wardrobe of outfits and accessories for the doll. The group also makes dinosaurs and snakes, and a roadway with small cars for the boys. So, the Phoebes joined in and created some items to donate to the project (see more photos below).

March 5, Phoebe "Make It and Take It" at the Castro Valley Library. This is a free event for library patrons of all ages to assemble and adorn stump dolls. Contact Diane to volunteer.

March 17, Thursday, Phoebe Meeting, 6:30 to 9:30 P.M., Alameda Education Building, Hayward. Bring your doll or art piece made from the "noodle" strips of fabric you picked up at the January meeting. Bring a bowl of noodles for yourself for the pasta potluck. Help yourself to the spaghetti sauce provided at the meeting.

Show and Tell

 

Rosie brought her doll from the Elenor Peace Bailey workshop. She used an Elenor pattern she already had but had not made before, Suzie Shopper.

 Suzanne also used this pattern, and you will note both dolls have their handbags and are ready to "shop 'til they drop!"

Betts brought some exquisite items from her fabulous collection...many obtained on her numerous trips to Paris.

She also brought lovely creations made from items in her "stash."

Absolutely over-the-top beautiful!!!

 

 

Kathy showed off her colorful and expertly sewn quilt.

And Anne brought her notions challenge doll made with snaps, hooks and eyes and  zipper.

Bonnie has been busy making collages and adding her original embellishments.

Harlene created this necklace from wire, which seems like a difficult thing to do. Every stitch is so perfectly even.

Colleen has sewn this amazing "I Spy" baby quilt, with motifs to be used while playing "I Spy" with the little one.

Rosie showed us her skating "Dancing Fool" from the Kate Church workshop. Love those skates!

Above is Linda's "Me,Myself and I" doll from Elenor's workshop. She hasn't sewn on the hands yet, but she has created a lot of possibilities.

 

  And above is Linda's Pinocchio "Tilda" doll to be displayed at the Castro Valley Library exhibit.
