Phoebes welcome new visitor LaQuinta Tummings at the August meeting.

 

 

 

We were missing some of favorite Phoebes this meeting—Barb and Betts were busy getting ready for there trip to Australia. They and Sally are shown here in a photo lifted from Patty Culea's Facebook page. There were all busy exhibiting, selling and teaching some of their latest artistic creations during their stay. Betts is second from the left next to Patty, and Sally and Barbara are second and third from the right.

They don't look like they were missing us though—they are obviously having a good time! Elinor Peace Bailey is on the left next to Sally, and Barbara and Betts are first and second from the right, behind Patty.

SHOW AND TELL

 

 

Zanaib's doll definitely demonstrates
her talent for combining color and pattern in a wonderful way.

 

Zanaib also brought some of her beautiful chain crochet necklaces.

 

Ophelia brought the doll she made in Bonnie's class. So cute!

 

First-time vistor, LaQuinta, who discovered Phoebes
via the blog, is a quilter and a doll maker.
She brought one of her fabulous cloth dolls
which incorporates quilting techniques.

 

Here are two of Maudell's examples of the cute dolls Bonnie taught in her
recent beginning doll-making class.

 

Tani brought her doll from Bonnie's class, which features her own interpretation
using another head pattern.



Bonnie brought some of her flat cloth dolls for all to see.



These flat dolls show another of Bonnie's original designs.



This doll represents an older flat doll pattern Bonnie created in
her ever evolving progression of original ideas.



Sally brought some of hand-painted watercolor cards to the July meeting,
and this month she exhibited the cloth painted birds inspired by the card designs.
She plans to take the cards and the birds to sell in Australia.



Sharon is getting ready for a series of holiday craft shows, as well as her
Nested Treasures inventory, and brought these beautiful fabric collaged bags
made with vintage fabrics and trims.



Stephanie is also getting ready for holiday craft shows in San Francisco,
and brought samples of her every popular cloth sculpted Christmas ornaments.

August News



Stephanie brought her sculpted doll head to the July meeting.
She and Pame both took the Ankie Daanon workshop at NIADA.
The head is paperclay over a Styrofoam heart-shaped base.

Calendar of Events 2013

August 15, Phoebe Meeting, 6:30 P.M., Alameda County Education Building, Hayward. Rosie will be conducting a "make it and take it" hands-on activity. The theme of the challenge and exchange is "fish or fishy stuff." Bring 5 theme buttons to exchange and make something for yourself, too.

September 19, Phoebe Meeting, 6:30 P.M., Alameda County Education Building, Hayward. Judy will be in charge of the "make it and take it." The button theme will be "autumn colors." Bring your tools and your nametag.

July Show and Tell

 

This is the paperclay head Pame sculpted. Both Stephanie
and Pame did a fabulous job of sculpting at their workshop.

Sally brought some examples of her latest watercolor art.
Her gift of whimsy and humor are clearly evident in her work.

Here is another of Sally's paintings.

Sally is having her paintings printed on greeting cards,
which she will be selling in the booth she will share with
Barbara and Betts at a show in Australia soon.
All three will be exhibiting and conducting classes.

Mary also took a class at the recent NIADA convention...
E.J. Taylor's costuming workshop. Mary first made the
mannequin, then drafted the pattern for her period
clothing— the man's coat shown here.

Mary brought her Stephanie Blythe porcelain doll in an abalone shell.
All attendees of the NAIDA conference went home with one.

Zanaib has been going crazy folding book pages
and has ended up with some wondrous altered book creations.

Bonnie brought examples of her many techniques for creating embellishments.
She will cover these and more in her doll-making class on August 1.

Stephanie brought her latest cloth doll creation.
Her dolls are always so cute.

Sharon is busy creating items to sell at her three upcoming craft shows.
Here are examples of her beautiful work
and her love of all things French.

 

Betts has agreed to teach the "Frog Prince" class next year, so be sure to get

your name on the list when it is passed around (see more photos below).

 

 

Show and Tell for June 

  

Mary Porter Vaughan brought her marionette she made

in an E. J. Taylor workshop.

Suzanne had completed a very shapely ballerina, Lucy, in shades of

orange and lavender. What a great color combination!

 

Marcella brought her wonderful needle-felted doll from the

Deborah Pope workshop.

I think these two adorable dolls were costumed by Maudell Houston.

If I'm wrong, please let me know.



I believe this cute elfin Santa was made by Diane Willis.

Betts brought three examples of her "Frog Prince." He is made from

her original pattern and she had conducted a workshop on him a

few years back. Many of us who joined Phoebes since then have

been wanting Betts to offer this workshop again.

 

The Frog Prince is an amazing doll and is open to

individual interpretation as far as costuming goes.

There are so many possibilities!

 

An Evening with Roxanne Padgett and Show and Tell From May and June

 

The May meeting was a very special one in many ways, but the highlight of the evening was the lecture and presentation by former Phoebe Roxanne Padgett, who has just published her new book, Acrylic Techniques in Mixed Media, Layer, Scribble, Stencil, Stamp.

Roxanne brought tons of examples of her work, including many of the items featured in her book. She lectured on the endless ways to create surface designs on paper and fabric using a basic color palette and items found around the house and from dollar stores or home improvement stores to make stencils and prints. She shared a wealth of knowledge she has learned from an artful life... including experience as an art teacher in public schools and in her work at the Museum of Children's Art in Oakland, CA. Everyone enjoyed her lecture immensely and we were excited to go home and try the techniques we learned from her.

Roxanne brought examples of her layered mixed media papers and canvases.

Her colors and shapes virtually "pop" from the pages.

She brought books, journals, tags and zippered bags covered with

her fabulous designs.

This journal cover featuring a hand design was exceptional.

Her bird with moveable wings and pencil legs was a knock-out.

Roxanne's work has been featured in many publications,

including numerous issues of Somerset Magazine, Sew Somerset, and Stuffed.

A dynamic creation based on the color wheel.

 

 

Thank you, Roxanne, for a memorable evening!

Mary Porter Vaughan brought her sculpted Fimo clay doll

to "Show and Tell" for all to admire.

Harlene's cloth doll was so cute.

Mary also brought a doll made using techniques

learned in the Akira Blount workshop.

Several wonderful examples of needle felted dolls from

the Deborah Pope workshop were exhibited—and as you

can see—were truly amazing.

May 2013 Update



Colleen brought this doll to her April Enrichment Presentation
to illustrate one of the many possibilities for attaching doll hair.

June 1-2, 8-9, Pro Arts East Bay Open Studios in Alameda. Visit studios of the many talented artists located in Alameda. Several Phoebes will be exhibiting at Goose Cottage, 1610 Minturn Street. Studio listings and maps will be available there.

June 6, Phoebe Board Meeting, 7 P.M., Sally's

June 20, Phoebe Meeting, 6:30 P.M., Alameda County Education Building, Hayward. Enrichment: Barbara Willis will be covering "Stuffing Class #2." Challenge and exchange theme is "men and/or flags." Make It and Take It" will be led by Harlene Strauss, who will show us how to make a bead bracelet. Bring needle nose pliers and some beads, if you have some you would like to use. Harlene will also have some available.

June 27-30, NIADA (National Institute of American Doll Artists) Convention to be held in the Bay Area. A doll-making school will be offered June 24-26. Check NIADA Web site for information.

June 29 (Saturday), Phoebe Alameda County Fair "Make It and Take It" Outreach Event, noon to 6 P.M. Contact Diane at cwlwld@pacbell.net to sign up for a shift. This is always a fun and personally rewarding experience for everyone who volunteers.

July 11 and 12, Leslie Molen "Ling Ling Doll Workshop." Contact Stephanie Smith at smitharts2002@yahoo.com for details.

August 1 (Thursday), Bonnie Hoover's Beginning Doll Making Workshop for beginner and intermediate doll makers. Make a doll from Bonnie's 17" Thalia pattern and learn basic construction, as well as the art of embellishment with yoyos, covered buttons, braid and more, including wig styles. Class is $40 plus $7 for her published pattern. Class is limited to 12 people. Contact Bonnie at bondonhoov@sbcglobal.net. You do not have to be a Phoebe to attend this class, so please pass this information on to an interested friend.
